Technopoly and technocracy

Technology has been increasing in interest and sophistication since back before we even knew about it. Bacon gave us a theory that characterized humans as having an "impulse to invent." He believed that "Money, not land, was the key to wealth." Money is earned by having a more productive way of producing goods or inventing something that does that such thing.

Neil Postman agreed that man is born with an instinct to barter and acquire wealth. He defines technolopy as technology is always being advanced and who ever can provide that item at the cheapest price will basically be running a monopoly. It is similar but also different to technocracy. Both relate to improving technology, but they use the technology for different reasons. Technology will continue to advance and continue to make human's life easier. Technology will grow and grow until humans rely on it. We will not be able to function without it because it has been our part so easily that we will become overwhelmed if we ever have to do all that work by ourselves. Not to mention we will become vastly less productive. Technology can produce much faster and more consistent that factory workers can. This article agrees with this thought that humans would be nowhere with out technology.

The concepts are similar in Brave New World. Technology will control human life. The concepts in Brave New World present a life controlled by technology. Technology spawns all human life. They breed each individual to perform a specific task for the rest of their life. They do all this through the use or technology and they operate technology everyday of their life. As you can see technology is the main focus of the story.

Its is not a long time until we are over run by technology. Before we know it we will involve technology is every aspect of living. I do not feel this would be completely awful because technology is much more productive and efficient. As long as we do not forget how to function with out the use of any technology we will be alright.

Brave New World

This article was an interesting insight on what may happen in just a few years. It gave detailed exampled and evidence to suggest some of these things would become reality. I do believe that it is just a matter of time before technology becomes more intelligent than humans. Once a computer becomes as smart as humans they will be able to create smarter and smarter computers than humans would never have the intelligence to create.

"Not just doing arithmetic very quickly or composing piano music but also driving cars, writing books, making ethical decisions, appreciating fancy paintings, making witty observations at cocktail parties." Although I believe computers will become more intelligent than humans, I do not believe that they will become capable of feeling emotion of making witty observations like this excerpt states. Technology will only be able to do actions where the answer can be calculated out. They will have no emotion or sense of common sense like humans have. Humans intelligence can be beaten out, but there are certain things about us that can never be created.

Technology can be a major blessing to man kind in the health department. My grandfather had a pacemaker installed in his heart. Is this an artificial item? Yes, however this piece of technology has saved my grandfathers life and added made his quality of life much better. For reasons like this, i feel that technology can have a hug impact in the medical field. Not only can it save and prolong live, but it can make your life a lot easier and more enjoyable .

I do not feel that having some sort of technology on a body will make them any less of a human. They still act the same, think the same, and look the same. The only difference is the person has a piece of metal inside of them helping them live. With technology inside a person they are still 100% authentic human.

Toys are a magical thing for kids of all ages. With love, attention, and imaginative thought toys can become alive. This article agreed with my belief. Toys can not literally become alive but, there being exists in our head, and in our head is where anything is possible.

“He does not have hind legs, so therefore cannot hop and even if he was made to possess hind legs, he would lack the capacity to act on them and still could not hop. He would need to be physically manipulated by the boy or by Nana” (1). This quote is referring to the Velveteen Rabbit and how the rabbit can not physically move its self but can still be very much alive to the child. A child’s imagination and love of his toys is a powerful thing. I remember back to when I was a kid running around my house with a superman cape on. In my head it actually seemed like I could fly faster than a speeding bullet, or lift a train off the tracks with just one arm. I believed all this because I loved those toys so much that I let them become my reality. Looking back on it now, I realize that they are just plastic toys with paint, but back in the good old days, those toys came alive.

During my childhood my reasoning for why my toys were able to suddenly become alive was based off curiosity aroused from the Toy Story movies. I truly believed that my toys would come alive and move around when ever I wasn’t watching them. I would try to catch them in the act by suddenly turning around or snapping on the lights in the middle of the night. I never did catch them moving, but I just assumed that they were remarkable at freezing. However this ongoing believe supplemented my beliefs of the toys coming alive when I was playing with them.

An imagination is a powerful phenomenon that can make your wildest dreams come true. To this day I can still not explain how playing with my toys engulfed me into their world as they became alive. I know they are just plastic, and coming alive is physically impossible, but when signed in to my imagination, the world as we know it had no limits.
